Sew Your Own Stuffed Felt Piggy
Begin by cutting all of your felt pieces as directed by the last page of the pattern. The easiest
way to cut felt is with a small sharp pair of scissors. For the greatest precision you could
choose to trace the pattern pieces onto the felt, iron some wax paper to the felt then trace
onto that and cut, or tape the pattern pieces to the felt with some wide clear tape, cutting
through both tape and felt simultaneously.
Begin by cutting out all of the pieces from wool or blended felt as per the pig sewing pattern
on page 6.
Next we’ll give this piggy some eyes! I like to use plastic doll eyes, but you could fully
embroider the eyes and face or use some beads or buttons for eyes. To install plastic safety
eyes you will poke a hole where you intend to install the eye. Insert the end of the eye post
through the hole. Push the washer down over the eye post on the inside of the pig.
Cut a small piece of pipe cleaner to fit to the tail. Sew the pipe cleaner in place at the inside
of the pig along the tail piece. Sew it into place by sending stitches through the width of the
felt to hide the stitching from the outside.
Match the pig’s body to the Under Body piece by pinning at the legs. Sew the two pieces
together starting at the back, sewing along the rear towards the front, along both legs,
ending at the bottom tip of the nose to tie off the thread (as shown in the figure above).
Match and pin the opposite side of the pig into place and begin sewing at the back top of
the pig just before the tail (as shown in the above example). Stitch the pieces together sew-
ing towards the back, along the tail and legs heading toward the face.
Once you reach the pig’s snout area, match the upper tips of the snout together and secure
with a single stitch or two. Pinch the felt together to open up the end of the snout, (or insert
the end of a skinny pen or dowel into the end to keep the space open to pop on the front
of the snout). I sometimes like to add a couple of stitches of embroidery thread into the end
of the snout piece to create two nostril details.
Place the round snout piece of felt over the open snout end and stitch in place around
edges.
Attach one side of the Face/Back piece to the body starting right at the end of the nose/snout. Continue sewing until you’ve attached the entire piece along one side.
Now to add wire to the legs! I like to hold the wire/pipe cleaner up to the body to gauge
how long it should be. I then fold it in half to create a “V” or “U” shape. Trim the wire with
pliers/cutters if needed. Insert one side of each of the “V” into the legs. Create one for each
both front and back legs. Begin stuffing the legs only of the pig.
Return to the tip of the snout and begin sewing the opposite side of the face piece. When
you’ve sewn about halfway down the back stop and stuff the face and chest of the pig.
Continue sewing and stuffing until you reach the tail. Sew up and around the tail and to the
back of the legs until you have a small opening left. Stuff the pig the rest of the way leaving
the tail empty except for the sewn in wire.
Once the pig has been entirely stuffed, sew the opening shut.
Pin the set of ears into placed across the top of the head. Sew the ears in place by passing the threaded needle back and forth through the head, passing through the bottom of the ear, creating a stitch to hold the ear into place.
Twist the the little piggy tail into a spiral shape and you’re done!
Make these cute little piggies in an array of colors or even add spots! I like to add spots by cutting scraps of felt into small circular shapes and top stitching them into place.
